As a two-year-old showing early promise, he won his first start prior to Christmas and his talent was confirmed shortly after with Group One success in the VRC Sires. At three, Barely a Moment turned in some classic performances, running second to Alinghi in the Ascot Vale and again second in the Group One Caulfield Guineas. He finished off his spring campaign with another second in the Sandown Guineas, heading off Cadbury Guineas winner Al Maher in third place.
At four, Barely a Moment was world-class, winning two Group One races in succession: the Dubai Racing Club Cup and Toorak Handicap, over 1400m and 1600m respectively. Dropping back to 1200m three weeks later, he took on the best sprinters around in the Group One Salinger, running second to Glamour Puss (giving her 5kg) and defeating champion international sprinters, Takeover Target and Cape of Good Hope.
